Tips for Shopping Holiday Clearance

I love shopping the end of season or Holiday clearance sales. I start shopping for next year’s gifts the day after Christmas. Of course I look for inexpensive decorations too. I refuse to pay full price for decorations!

Here are a few tips for scoring great clearance deals:

  • Look for food items in Holiday packaging. For example, Target had Quaker Granola Bars for $1.19 each since they have snowflake sprinkles on them. They also had Pepperidge Farm Crackers at 50% off because the crackers were Holiday shaped. Combine coupons with the markdowns for great savings!
  • Pick up stocking stuffer items for Easter baskets and party favors. Several of the small toys make great items to add to your gift stockpile. I either look for items that aren’t in Christmas packaging or take them out of the package.
  • Make sure you are actually getting a deal! I eavesdropped on the workers at Michael’s. They said that the toy gift sets were actually cheaper the week before Christmas. They went through and marked the prices up after Christmas and advertised 50% off.
  • Stockup on gift baskets. I always look for gift baskets that are 70-75% off. Baskets are great to have on hand to make a quick gift or to use for organization.

Even though the baskets I picked up are Christmas themed, the liner can easily be removed. The basket looks totally different by taking out the liner and adding cloth napkins, towels or tissue paper!

  • Think about what you usually do at Christmas. Do you bake or make candy? Then you need to stockup on containers to disperse your goodies in. Do you use a lot of gift bags or wrapping paper? Make sure to grab the wrapping supplies now- I forgot last year and was in a total pinch on Christmas Eve with no wrapping paper or tape!

Don’t just look for Holiday items when you are out shopping. Look for items that can be re-purposed and used for other events throughout the year.
