Should You Buy Paint Samples?

This is the year for working on the house! Our house is about 13 years old and we have lived in it for almost five years. We have not done a thing as far as painting or fixing it up since we bought it. The previous owner used flat paint and it is driving me crazy! Two young boys and flat paint do not mix well!

We headed to Lowes to pick out paint samples. My best advice is to not rely on the little paint chips. Fork out the $2.50 and buy a small sample of paint. The paint almost always looks different on the wall then on the little paper chip. We ended up buying 5 different sample colors. Yes, it may seem like a waste of money- especially if you are a couponer like me! However, in the long run it will save you time and money.

Before the kids were born, hubby and I made over two houses and sold them. We did everything from painting, to changing out fixtures, new flooring, refinishing cabinets and doing the landscaping. The very first house is where we learned our painting lesson! We picked out paint, bought it an painted a huge room. When the paint dried it looked awful! It was a waste of time and money.

If you are faced with making a decision about paint colors, pay the extra money for the samples. Place a double coat of paint on the wall. Evaluate the colors in different lighting and against the flooring and counter tops.

What are your home improvement tips? We will be working on the house a lot this year so I would love to hear your thoughts!
