Things to Have In Your Car For Summer

A couple of months ago I wrote about making emergency preparedness kits. I encourage you to keep one in your car and one at home. Now that summer is approaching, I found a few more items that I will be adding to my car. Not all of the items are necessarily for an emergency but they do come in handy during the summer months!

Sunscreen
Insect Repellent
After Bite (Remember I am popular with the mosquitoes!)
Bottled Water
Water Resistant Beach Blanket (Great for sporting events or picnics!)
Umbrella (Thunderstorms here in Virginia pop-up quick!)
Folding Chair
Hats
Baby Wipes (Not just for babies! Great for sticky hands or dirt.)

One thing we needed this weekend was dry socks! The boys and I had a busy Saturday going from one activity to the next. The ground was soaked from rain and our shoes and socks were soaked. I ended up buying a package of socks so we could all have dry feet for the last event of the day!

We are on the road a lot in the summer and it is always nice to know we have these items ready in the car. What additional supplies do you add to your car during the summer months?

  1. we live in UT and frequently go day-camping in the mountains. Even if it is 90 here in the valley, the temperature can drop as much as 30 at different elevations, and the sun hides at unexpected times depending on where on the mountain you are. I always keep a change of clothes that are warmer than we’d be wearing. So jeans and a long sleeve top or sweatshirt. They may not be pretty, but they get a lot of use. Then, even if we’re out and someone throws up or falls in mud….they can still change if they have to, and I’d rather my kids feel too hot for a little while than to be too cold.

  2. I have paper towels, plastic bags, regular towels, spare clothes (undies, socks and pants), snack food (I fill up and bring fresh water when we leave the house but I have granola bars, fruit snacks, raisins… that stay in the car most all of the time), a power inverter (gives me a regular outlet in my car so I can charge/run anything I might need or want – comes in handy when I have to use my children’s nebulizer and we are traveling – ), first aid kit (everything from standard bandaids to gauze, strips, ice packs, tape, scissors…..) porta potty (I have 6 year old twins and a 4 year old and I sometimes travel from one end of California to the other, by myself. I do not want to take the chance, in the middle of no-where, with my children).

Basically, my van is a self contained home on wheels. The only thing I don’t have is running water and a sewage system (yes, I do have means to keep things – like a gallon of milk – cold for 8 hours) oh and I guess I don’t have laundry facilities in my vehicle either. :-)
