Online shopping has increased more and more over the last few years. It’s just so easy to shop with the click of a button! I love to shop online myself since we live out in the country. Plus, I like using coupon codes to save even more! To protect yourself from credit card theft, here are a few tips you should follow when shopping online.

  1. Always use a credit card or paypal. Do not use your bank ATM card. I use my Capital One card and they are wonderful about monitoring it. A couple of years ago I made a big online order and within minutes Capital One was on the phone verifying it was me who made the purchase. It is much easier to dispute a credit card charges over your ATM card. Plus, someone could clean out your bank account before you ever know that your information was stolen.secure website
  2. Make sure you are shopping on a secure website. On the webpage where you enter your credit card information, look for an “s” after http in the web address of that page. The https means that you are on a secure page and your information will be protected.
  3. Make sure your security software on your computer is updated. You also want to make sure the browser you use (ie Firefox, Internet Exporler, etc.) is updated.
  4. If you are using a WiFi connection make sure that it is from a trusted source. Using a random WiFi connection puts you at higher risk. That means be careful when you are using your computer in a public space like Starbucks.
  5. Look for the privacy policy and third party seals of approval if you are on an unfamiliar site. Seals from the Better Business Bureau and TRUSTe are a good sign. However, remember that it could be a false image. To make sure it is a real seal of approval just click on the image.
  6. Be careful about clicking through links sent in emails. I know that a lot of email accounts get hijacked. If you get an email from a friend with just a link and no text, it is probably a spam link! If in doubt about a link sent from an email, verify with the person before clicking!

I hope you all score some great online deals! Just remember to have security measures in place!
