Another Pete the Cat book arrived today in the mail! It was an “I Can Read Book” that quickly grabbed my daughter’s attention (Litsa). She’s five and quickly learning to read. The sentence said, “”Go in the water,” says Mom.” She pointed to each word and was able to read her practiced sight words. Water and says were the only two new words that I had to introduce.
When children learn to recognize sight words and that sight words help create sentences, they begin to understand the dynamics of reading! Thus if you have young learners at home, I encourage you to work with your reader(s) this summer. Increase their knowledge of sight words. Create games, puzzles, matching cards, and more to familiarize young readers with words. Allow them many opportunities to read their sight words in these I Can Read Books.
Allow yourself as a parent, your child’s first teacher, to read over these 100 Tips for Beginning Readers! Encourage them, read to them and let them read to you. By the end of the summer, you’ll have them reading above grade level.
