black elderberry

There has been some really nasty illnesses going around this winter. I have been exposed to people that have had the flu, strep-throat and the stomach virus. Besides knocking on wood, I am keeping my immune system boosted with juicing and black elderberry. Juicing provides me with the essential vitamins and nutrients I need. However, I needed something extra to boost my immune system when I started feeling the onset of an illness. A friend had suggested black elderberry syrup or lozenges.

Black elderberries come from a plant. The berries are said to increase the immune system. It is said to reduce the length of time of the flu if taken within 24-48 hours of first symptoms. I started on the Sambucol Black Elderberry Syrup at the first sign of a scratchy throat. I was getting ready for a karate tournament that weekend and wanted to cut the illness as short as possible. I can’t say if it was coincidence or not, but my symptoms never got worse than a scratchy throat and very slight congestion.

This last week I started to notice slight symptoms yet again. The store was out of the syrup so I am trying the Sambucol tablets this time. So far so good.

The syrup tastes really good! There are no age restrictions, so children can take it too. I will say that it is expensive. However, I think it’s worth it to avoid being sick for several days. Since I know that so many people at our dojo have been sick with confirmed cases of the flu and strep, I have been willing to pay for black elderberry!

What do you think? Have you tried it?
