During the summer months I try to can as much fruit as possible from local orchards. We also make homemade jam to give as Christmas gifts! To save money on my canning projects, I often buy fruit seconds from local orchards. During peach season I was able to get a peck of peaches at half price since they were really ripe. These peaches were perfect for ham and canned sliced peaches.

Last weekend my family and I ventured to a local orchard (Fruit Hill Orchard) for apples. I told them that I was looking for applesauce apples and they offered me a fantastic deal! If my family and I would pick up apples off the ground, we could score a bushel of apples for just $8!

There were plenty of decent apples on the ground that were suitable for applesauce. Some apples had bruises, but those could easily be cut off when we were skinning the apples. In no time we had our box filled with apple seconds. We also combined several types of apples in our bushel since applesauce tastes the best with a combination of apples. Refer to my apple guide for types of apples that are good for baking, applesauce or eating!

If you are looking for a deal on canning fruit, make sure to check with your local orchard. Plus, I just love supporting local business!
