Last week I unexpectedly had car trouble. I pulled into a parking spot and the ignition was stuck in the accessory mode. That meant the car wouldn’t shut completely off and I couldn’t restart it. I was baffled! I tried the usual tricks of turning the steering wheel and taking it in and out of gear. Nothing worked. Of course my first call was to hubby who was 40 minutes away getting ready to pick the boys up from school. Since he couldn’t get to me quickly, I called the dealership.

The dealership reminded me that my car came with roadside assistance. I had completely forgotten about this! The roadside assistance first set up someone to come and jump the car battery. Unfortunately, this was not the problem. The next step was dispatching a tow truck. Since I was only a few miles from the dealership, the tow would have been free with the roadside assistance package I had. The tow truck driver was able to get my car started and told me to drive straight to the dealership as they followed me.

My car is still at the dealership being diagnosed. It is some kind of electrical issue- hopefully covered by warranty!

Since I forgot I had the roadside assistance, I wanted to remind all of you to check your policies. If you have a newer car, many times roadside assistance is included when you buy the car. Mine is good for five years which will end in October. Having the roadside assistance sure saved me though!

  1. Renae, that was really nice of your dealership reminding you that you had roadside assistance service given to you without any cost. Oh, a roadside service is something that I should probably look into. I say that because of the snowy conditions that comes in late November here in Colorado so, I would want to be prepared if ever my car ends up broken down on the side of the road.

  2. I would be so scared if something like that happened to me! However, I am so glad that there are tow trucks available through roadside assistance to help out in situations like this. Especially when you have responsibilities and kids at home who are in need of your presence.

  3. I agree that it can be easy to forget you have roadside assistance. I believe that although it’s hard to remember it, it’s very vital to do so. It’s not everyday when you need a tow, but when you do, getting one can sometimes save your life.

  4. Hi, Thanks for your sharing, Renae Chiovaro! It is very useful. Once I unexpectedly had car trouble, at that time, I didn’t know what I have to do. However, thanks to your post, I have had a good solution for me in the future – Roadside Assistance Reminder.

  5. Having unexpected car trouble is no fun. I remember I had a pretty similar experience to yours here, but I didn’t have the roadside assistance. It’s nice that you were able to have a tow truck come and help you for free!

  6. It’s really cool that the tow truck helped you fix your car and follow you to the dealership to get a permanent repair. I think finding a reliable and trustworthy towing company is so important if something goes wrong with your car while on the road. I plan to research and find one that is covered by insurance and that I can trust before I need it.

  7. It’s unfortunate that it took multiple attempts to get to the source of the problem. At least, you were able to get the road side assistance that you needed in the first place.
