Cicada Brood II Emerging

Cicada

Over the last week we have started seeing more and more cicadas. I mentioned a few weeks ago that the Cicada Brood II invasion was coming to our area. Millions of cicadas are supposed to be emerging.

Cicada Brood II

We have had a cooler than usual spring here in Virginia. The cicadas won’t emerge until the ground temperature is in the 60’s. With the gradual warming the bugs have started showing up. We have holes all over our yard. The cicadas tunnel from underground and then shed their shells.

My boys have been collecting the cicada shells. Not to mention they have been picking up the live cicadas! They are very docile and let the boys handle them without putting up a fight. Of course by boys wanted me to hold a cicada and I passed on the offer! I have some very happy bug loving boys though!

Cicada Holes

Based on the holes in our yard, I expect the cicada invasion will get a lot worse in the coming week. So far I have not noticed the noise that is said to come along with cicadas. Apparently they are supposed to be very noisy. Maybe that comes when the majority arrives? We shall see!

Have you seen any cicadas yet?

  1. I have never even heard of these things, we live in NY. And I certainly hope we don’t get them here.. yuck! I don’t like bugs of any kind, lol.

    • Hi Valerie,
This is my first experience with cicadas too! This particular brood only emerges every 17 years. I know they are for sure going to be in the North Carolina/Virginia area but I am not sure how far north they will extend. My boys are loving it! But I sure hope they don’t get much worse! I don’t want to be crunching bugs when I walk outside!
