Country Life: Broody Hen & Chicks on the Way

broody hen

Last week nature took over and our beloved hen, Brown Town, decided she wanted to raise chicks again. It seems that each Spring Brown Town becomes broody. She is just a natural mom! This will be the third batch of chicks she has raised. The last thing we need is more chickens. We have nine laying hens at the moment and have more eggs than we know what to do with. However, I felt that I should let nature run it’s course with our broody hen.

The cool thing is, our friends haveĀ  chicken coop built but have yet to purchase chicks. We will raise these chicks for them and then give them the hens once they are old enough. Originally Brown Town was sitting on five eggs. I put a couple more eggs underneath her since our friends are looking for four hens. Chances are that we will get a few roosters out of these chicks.

I can’t wait to share this experience with my friends children! Watching a mama hen with chicks is one of the neatest experiences. Mama hens are such good moms.
