Country Life: Chickens Molting

Are your chickens looking a little scraggly? If they are missing feathers then they are most likely molting! Our girls molt every Fall. It seems a bit odd to me since the molting process seems to take place as the weather turns colder. We have had temperatures in the 30’s at night and my girls are missing half their feathers. The seem to be doing just fine though!

When chickens molt their egg production can slow down. This is okay for us right now since we have an abundance of eggs in the refrigerator. Last year the molting process continued for several weeks and we had to buy eggs! We are hoping to make it through the slow egg production period without having to purchase eggs this year.

If you don’t have your own chickens and are interested in more details, check out my post on raising chickens for eggs.
