DIY Ceramic Tile Coasters

Tile coasters are another easy homemade gift idea. These tile coasters are really inexpensive to make. I found the tiles I used at a second hand store for $0.10 each. The hardware stores will also have inexpensive tiles too. I made some with Christmas cards from last year and I made others with pictures. You can use any type of paper that you can mod podge!

Supplies Needed

The first thing you need to do is to cut your paper, card or picture to fir the 4″ x 4″ ceramic tile. Cut the paper just shy of 4″x 4″. You don’t want the paper or picture to hang over the edge of the tile.  Once you have your paper or photo cut, you are ready to mod podge!

Apply a thin layer of mod podge to the tile. Then coat the back side of the paper or photo you are using. Press the paper or photo onto the tile.

Then apply a thin coat of mod podge over top of the picture. Let the mod podge dry. It dries pretty quickly!

Apply several layers of mod podge to each coaster. I did about five coats, making sure to let each layer dry before applying the next coat. Let the mod podge dry for 24 hours and then apply a clear acrylic sealer spray. This is spray in an aerosol can that will protect your mod podged item.

After everything is dry, you will want to apply a felt baking to the ceramic coaster. Cut the felt just shy of 4″ x 4″. I used Elmer’s Craftbond Adhesive Spray to apply the felt baking. You could also use cork or the little sticky bumpers you can find at the hardware store.

For the trim, I used jute twine to finish the edge. I just hot glued the double row of twine around the tile. You could also paint the edge if you wanted.

I LOVE how the photo tiles came out! I just printed these pictures on stock card after I changed the picture to sepia tone. Yes, I printed straight from my computer to my home printer. You could also use real photos though.
