double yolk egg

A few days ago I was at work and received a text from hubby. When I initially picked up the phone all I saw was the text “twins!”. I paused for a minute trying to think of who we knew that was pregnant. Then all of the sudden a picture of a double yolk egg popped up! Whew! No humans twins – but our first double yolked egg in our five years of raising chickens.

Double yolk eggs occur usually in younger chickens. It means that their reproductive cycle is not synchronized yet and ovulation occurs to quickly. The double yolk egg did in fact come from one of the pullet eggs! You can see in the picture that there is a lot less egg white since it was such a small egg. Hubby felt lucky to get a double yolk!

Have you ever seen a double yolk egg?
