Imagine living in a place where girls were not allowed to be educated. For many of us in the United States, we haven’t given much thought to this reality. There are many countries where educating girls is discouraged. Today, over 60 million girls are out of school globally. Unfortunately those supporting education, have been met with violence.

As the Taliban became a  powerful force in Pakistan, one girl and her father took a stand. Malala Yousafzai began by writing a blog under a pen name as the Taliban took charge preventing many from receiving an education. In fact Malala’s father was told that he would need to close his school. Although Malala and her father received death threats, they never backed down on their feelings about the right to education.

I recently had the opportunity to be on a conference call with Malala who was the 2014 Nobel Prize Winner. She is such a humble young women! I was so impressed with her down to earth thoughts and how she really doesn’t want recognition for herself. She took a stand not for herself but for the voice of many.

In 2012, Malala was sought out by the Taliban and shot in the head for outspokenness about educating girls. Amazingly, she survived to carry on her mission of free education for all.
