Expiration Dates on Grocery Items

Do you ever look at the expiration or best by dates on food products before you buy them? I try to always look at the dates on food items whether it is salad dressing or meat or mayonnaise. Too many times I have gotten home only to realize that I have bought an expired item. There is a difference between and expiration date and a best by date. Best by dates are usually more lenient – if you eat this item past the date, you most likely won’t get sick. It just means that the product is not as high of quality. It’s a judgement call for best by dates. Expiration dates, usually mean the product is spoiled if past the date.

The other day I was redeeming a free product coupon that Johnsonville had sent me for the Butcher Shop Sausage. I didn’t follow my own rule since I was in a rush. I got home only to realize that the sausage was out of date. I can let some dates slide, but when it comes to meat, I don’t want to take chances. I returned the item the next day explaining it was out of date. When I went to the shelf to get a replacement item I found the same sausage that was three WEEKS past the best by date! Yes, three weeks. And there were at least 11 packages on the shelf. Obviously this store was not being managed very well and I am so glad I rarely shop there.

As a reminder, always look at expiration and best by dates when purchasing items at the grocery store. I know that we expect the items to be fresh that we are purchasing, but mistakes happen. To keep my family from getting sick, I am going back to paying close attention to dates!
