December has made is debut—and your calendar may have more scribbles of parties and after work affairs than you want to introduce your waistline too! Maybe potlucks to cook for—what can one take without sabotaging their own numbers on the scale!?! It just takes a few snack smarts to have the festive calendar dates shimmering! I (Litsa) always tell my daughter to make sure she is taking care of herself first—and not to worry what others are doing (at school around her)!?! Wouldn’t that unwritten rule work for ourselves too—take care of you first (and your family second if they are packing up to attend an event with you)—and others (Well, they’ll have to take a number three seat!?!). Only because our own sanity and waistlines do matter….here’s my list…(add to it).

Festive Snack Smart Tidbits to Remember

Pack a Safe Snack full of protein like almonds and other nuts—cashews and seeds like chia, sunflower, and pumpkin.

Eat something fiber-rich before you leave home (and make sure you have your own water bottle(s) in tote just in case water is the forgotten beverage—or pack your own fresh juice! It’s always a conversation starter too (…so you’ll be sure to have something to chatter about with being caught up in boring retold tales!).

Bring a Healthy Dish of your OWN like a roasted root vegetable rather than the standard cream-based casseroles and baked goods—–raw vegetables are always a treat too especially if there’s a variety to choose from (carrots, celery, red peppers, broccoli, snap peas—be different and less of each and more variety)!

Desserts—scan the table and decide on one if you really want it. Take a small sliver and find a quiet corner (one tends to eat more if they are eating and talking without noticing how much is going in–just fyi!?! It happens to us all.). If you take the first bite and the calories are worth it, savor it. But if you are not impressed, toss it! IF there’s fresh fruit next to the dessert table, opt to eat it instead. Pineapple is often one fruit that is sweeter than dessert—and you can have more than one piece.

Enjoy the festivities this season. Don’t forget to invite me—and make sure you take care of YOU first!
