Fitness: What is Active Rest?

active rest day

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the necessity of adding rest days into your fitness routine. When I say take a rest day, it doesn’t mean lay on the couch and eat brownies all day! Of course those lazy couch days are sometimes needed. However to better further your fitness routine, an active rest day is necessary.

An active rest day can also be called a recovery workout. The goal is to get your body moving. If you have had intense workouts in the days prior, your muscles are probably stiff from the buildup of lactic acid. Sitting around will only make those muscles tighten up more. If you get your body moving, the blood will start flowing which will result in muscle repair.

So what exercise should you do on an active rest day?

  • Yoga
  • Go for a walk/hike
  • Slow jog
  • Dynamic stretching
  • An easy swim
  • Play a sport with your kids (Go easy and don’t overdo it!)
  • An easy bike ride

On your active recovery day, you should not be sweating enough to need a shower afterwords! What I mean is this should be an easy workout. Just enough to get your blood flowing.
