freezer clean out

Have you cleaned out your freezer lately? Every few months I try to empty the freezer and reorganize it. I am amazed at how much stuff get’s pushed to the back of the freezer and forgotten! Make a point to clean out and organize your freezer on a quarterly basis so food doesn’t go to waste. Unfortunately, it had been about six months since I last did a freezer clean out so I ended up throwing some stuff out.

The first step in organizing the freezer is to pull everything out. I start making piles on the kitchen floor – discard, meat, produce, bread and odd items. I like to organize my freezer by product, thus the different piles. Throw out items that are overly freezer burned. Our chickens ended up scoring some frozen vegetables since they were so crystallized!

Once you know what needs to be thrown out, start repacking the freezer. I places the meat in the lower basket, the bread and buns on the next shelf, then odd items and then the produce up top. The bread needed to be down low since I keep bagels and English muffins for the boys. They know how to make their own breakfast if need be! I like produce at eye level so I remember what we have when meal planning. Plus we all like frozen fruit as a snack! Organize your shelves by what works for your family.

If you have items that need to be used soon, place them in the front of the freezer. I pulled a few things out that we will be eating this week.

What are your tips for organizing your freezer?
