Snow measuring

Earlier this week a snowstorm hit Virginia. This was our first measurable snowstorm this winter. My boys were filled with excitement anticipating the sledding ahead. One thing we like to do is measure how much snow we get. Usually we use a yard stick. This time we opted for something different.

My friend Danielle posted a picture on her facebook page of toys lined up on an outdoor table. Each toy was measured ranging from 1 to 9 inches. As the storm goes on, it is easy to look out the window to see what toys are covered! Take pictures every so often to record the covering of the toys.

When I showed my boys this idea they immediately started measuring toys. One thing to keep in mind, use toys that are non-electronic and won’t be ruined by getting wet. This seems obvious, but my boys first attempts were with toys that would not have held up well. We had to help them choose suitable measuring toys!

The snow was dry and powdery. Thankfully it didn’t really stick to the trees. This meant no power issues!

We ended up with about 7″ of snow by the time we woke up the next morning. All of the toys ended up being covered with the exception of the Reese’s candy tube (9″). This was a fun way for the boys to see the progression of the snowfall totals. It was also a clever way to teach them how to measure items!
