Now that you know what functional movement therapy is, we are going to discuss mind set. First, head on over to You Tube to watch a these videos to better understand movement. The videos are showing muscles working for you in the varied movements. Watching these would be a great start becoming more self aware. In the realm of Functional Training, this means knowing your body well enough to control it from head to toe during your daily life. Clients of mine are made aware of this long term goal from the start of their personal program.

Long Term Goals = 1 year or more

Think of the practice of my information to be a skill set or a discipline. Have you ever played a sport, learned to line dance in middle school, participated in a group fitness class, or learned how to use a new computer system that was required to do your job? At first, most of the information seems overwhelming and the person showing seems to have mastered the “Art Form.” The challenge is to understand the objectives set forth that are required to be successful. I want to simplify what habits you need to start thinking about to help you gain the skill of caring for you mind, body, and soul. Let’s call it your mind set.

Mind Set = A list of thoughts and feelings practiced to help form good habits to complete the skill of starting a Functional Program.

  1. Start thinking of the muscles moving or holding your body upright from the videos linked above. This should always be part of your new “mind set.”
  2. Make space in your life for your health.
  3. Anticipate feelings of doubt and insecurity.
  4. Believe you can get better.
  5. Practice.

What should you practice?

My clients are instructed to purchase certain DVD’s that I have used. This is the best way to start any type of exercise program that I have come across. It is actually a requirement for my clients because of the difference in results.  To start, purchase Yoga for Beginners by Rodney Yee.

yoga for beginners

This DVD is recommended because:

  • Best Coach in Yoga I have come across in my career.
  • Uses body weight.
  • Can be done on your schedule at home.
  • Safe way to learn the most useful movement patterns that can be used during your daily life.
  • Starts the process of body awareness and breathing awareness.

We will start putting up videos explaining more about mind sets and how to apply them. The first video will include me preparing my space, my body, and my mind before I begin any session. During the Yoga DVD (another one that will be listed on my next post), I will explain what I am thinking about during the different poses.

Please enjoy yourself and prepare to change your life. Make this is the right time for you. Taking care of yourself is always step one.

Note: You are always at your own risk when you start any exercise program. Consult your physician to ensure that it is appropriate before you begin a workout program.
