The nutrients in the soil is one of the most important factors in growing a successful vegetable garden. Before you start dumping fertilizer into the garden, the soil should be tested. Soil testing tells you exactly what nutrients should be added. It also identifies whether your soil is acidic, alkaline or neutral.
We bought a simple soil testing kit at Lowes for $3.98. After hubby tilled the garden, we took a soil sample. We found that our soil was the correct Ph and extremely low in nitrogen. Our soil is also low in potash but the phosphorus level was okay. That meant that we needed to add a fertilizer high in nitrogen and potash.
If we didn’t test our soil, we would have a very poor outcome to this years vegetable garden. I plan to retest the soil in a couple of weeks to ensure that we have applied enough nitrogen. Most of our vegetable garden plants thrive on nitrogen. It’s extremely important that we get the levels corrected if we want vegetables this year!

Thanks for the tip to get a soil testing kit. I think that would be more accurate than just using your five senses. I’m surprised at how low of a price they are.
