worm on swiss chard

Worms and caterpillars are a vegetable gardeners enemy. In a short time, a worm or a caterpillar can destroy a vegetable plant. It starts with a few holes in the leaves followed shortly by the computation of the whole leaf. Sometimes these critters blend right into the plant making it hard to find them! Here are a couple of signs that you have destructive worms or caterpillars in your vegetable garden:

  • Look for holes in the leaves of leafy greens. They particularly like kale, swiss chard and cabbage.swiss chard
  • Look for worm or caterpillar excrement. See that brown stuff that kind of looks like dirt? That is excrement from a worm on my swiss chard. If you see this brown stuff, you know for sure you have a worm or caterpillar nearby! Now to find them! Look on the underside of the leaf.

When you do have an outbreak of worm or caterpillars, try using B.t. Caterpillar Spray. This spray is actually a bacteria that is safe for humans but kills the caterpillars and worms.
