One of my favorite parts of having a Spring vegetable garden is discovering volunteer plants. Every year we have volunteer plants popup. Most of the time we have volunteer tomato plants. Volunteer plants occur when seeds from dropped fruit or vegetables last year germinate on their own. It’s like getting a freebie!

Some of our best tomato plants have come from volunteers. This year I had a ton of volunteer tomato plants and actually had to thin the seedlings. There were too many sprouting close to other crops. It makes me think that I shouldn’t have spent energy on planting tomato seedlings indoors earlier in the Spring! Nature definitely had a handle on tomato plants this year!

When you are weeding your garden, pay extra attention to volunteer seedlings that may be popping up. Hubby is not very good at identifying a weed versus a good plant. Therefore, I prefer to do the weeding in Spring. That way I can look for volunteer plants. Plus there are several herbs that have made it through our bitter cold winter.

How is your garden growing? Have you had any volunteer plants popup?
