Gardening: Weather Watch for Frost

Drip system in garden

It’s that time of year wear the weather really plays a role with vegetable gardens. We have yet to have frost here in central Virginia but it will probably happen soon. We still have tomatoes, peppers, kale and herbs growing in our vegetable garden. I will keep the garden growing as long as possible by paying close attention to the weather.

Before the first frost, I want to pick the tomatoes, peppers and some of the herbs. The kale is hardy and can withstand cold weather. Some of the herbs can also withstand cold weather. If your tomatoes are still green, remember that you can ripen green tomatoes indoors. For the herbs that I do harvest before the frost I either dry the herbs or make basil pesto.

If there is only a day or so of frost predicted, you could cover the plants for frost protection.  Pay close attention to the weather forecast over the next few weeks!
