Homemade Fried Battered Fish Recipe

Fried Fish Recipe

A couple of weeks ago I was in the mood for fish and chips. My kids actually like fish and I figured making homemade battered fish was better than the store bought products like Mrs. Paul’s. It is actually pretty easy to make fried fish!

Fried Battered Fish

1 Pound Fresh or Frozen Fish (Tilapia, Cod or Haddock)
1 Cup All-purpose Flour
1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
1 Cup Milk or Dark Beer (I used milk)
Vegetable Oil for Frying

In a bowl combine flour, baking soda, old bay seasoning and milk. Beat the mixture until smooth. Heat vegetable oil in a heavy pan to 350 degrees. I placed about a 1/2″ of vegetable oil in the bottom of a frying pan but you can use a deep fryer. Dip the thawed fish into the batter and cover all sides in the batter. Fry fish in hot oil for 2 minutes per side. Fish should be golden brown. Drain on a paper towel.

Tips

  • Instead of frying potatoes, I just baked tater tots.
  • This is not something we make regularly sue to the fat involved with frying. However, it is a good way to get your children to try fish!
  • Use whatever white flaky fish that is the on sale. I found the frozen Tilapia to be the best deal at Kroger.
