Weekly pizza night at our house has given us the opportunity to experiment with different crusts recipes and different toppings. One of these pizza experiments involved getting back to basics; we used a few very simple ingredients that resulted in major flavor and a delicious pizza that has since become one of my favorites to make and might become yours too! Give it a try!

Recipe type: Main, Easy Recipe
Ingredients
  • 2 ¼ tsp yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115 degrees F)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 ¼ cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 ¼ cup bread flour
  • Additional ½ cup whole wheat & ½ cup bread flour—mixed in RESERVE
Instructions
  1. Begin by greasing a large bowl with Crisco or cooking spray in preparation for your pizza dough.
  2. Next, dissolve yeast and honey in warm water in a separate mixing bowl or measuring cup. Let stand for a few minutes for yeast to activate.
  3. Then combine dissolved yeast in a stand mixing bowl with salt, olive oil, whole wheat flour and bread flour (NOT RESERVE).
  4. Attach bread dough hook to stand mixer and knead dough on speed 2 for 1-1 ½ minutes.
  5. Slowly add in reserve flour a ½ cup at a time and continue to mix on speed 2 for 1-2 minutes. When dough begins to clean edges of the bowl and all loose flour is incorporated, mix for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Remove hook and place dough in greased bowl, turn to coat all sides. (Note: spray your hands with cooking spray to help prevent dough sticking.)
  7. Cover with wax paper and place in a warm area free from draft to rise for 1 hour.
  8. After 1 hour, punch down dough. It is now ready to roll out!
  9. Choose to roll out entire portion of dough or divide to make smaller individual sized pizzas.
  10. To roll out dough, sprinkle pan or pizza peal with cornmeal and use a rolling pin. Thickness will depend on your preference.
  11. Spread with sauce, add toppings and bake or grill pizza!
