How to Keep Kids Entertained in the Car

We have taken several road trips this summer. Luckily our boys do pretty well with traveling. I do try to find activities to keep them entertained along the way.

Here are some tips to make your road trip go smoothly:

  • Pack lot’s of snacks and a cooler with drinks. My kids love snacks and packing items saves us a lot of money.
  • Bring a bag with toys and activities. I reserve some toys just for car trips. That way they seem new to the boys since they haven’t played with them recently. I also include coloring and activity books with crayons.
  • Use a portable DVD player for movies. We only allow the boys to watch movies in the car if we are taking a trip that is over an hour. This way the DVD player is special and they tend to be entertained.
  • Tell jokes. At the tail end of our last trip my boys were getting very bored. I have a smartphone so I was able to search for Knock Knock Jokes online. We had a lot of belly laughs over those jokes!
  • Play games like I Spy, Counting Games, License Plate Games and more. You can find a lot of great ideas on Moms Minivan including printable sheets for the games.
  • Point out the scenery, buildings and vehicles. We try to have educational conversations as we see new things. Since we are really busy, we do a lot of education on the go.

  1. Was that picture taken at the Henry Doorly Zoo? That globe thing looks familiar!

    • Hi Rachel,
The picture was taken at a zoo in Norfolk Virginia. We ended up passing by there on a rainy day. We had already promised the kids we would go- so we went rain or shine! It turned out to be a wonderful zoo trip! The animals were all active since it was cool out and it was like our own personal zoo since we were the only ones there!

      Have a great weekend!
