When I was writing up our menu plan for the week last Sunday, I realized we were out of flour tortillas. My mom recently told me they were easy to make. So, I decided to give it a try! It does take a bit of work to roll out the dough, but the final result was worth it!

Recipe: Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine together flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in butter until mixture is course and crumbly.
  2. Add the hot water and mix until the dough can be gathered together. The recipe works better if the water is very hot.
  3. Knead dough about 30 times until you can gather it into a ball.

  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let rest for 15 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll into a circle. On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to flatten and stretch each piece into a circle 7 inches across.

  6. Cook on an ungreased skillet over medium high heat for 10-15 seconds per side. Brown spots start to appear when done. Do not overcook or they will be too crispy!

Tips

  • Lard can be used instead of butter. In fact most recipes call for lard or shortening. I didn’t have either and butter worked just fine.
  • Store the tortillas in a plastic zipper bag to keep them soft. They will keep for a couple of days.
  • If you want larger tortillas, double the recipe and roll to 12″ circles.
  • It does take practice rolling out the dough to get it thin enough.
