Are your flowers blooming!?! Then, you are ready to start attracting hummingbirds and beautiful butterflies to your outdoor living areas! Here’s an easy, easy Hummingbird Feeder Recipe that you will enjoy mixing together to feed those beautiful birds this spring and summer!

Hummingbird Recipe:

  • 1 part sugar
  • 4 parts water

First, bring the water to a boil and then slowly add the sugar. Let it boil for a few minutes, then remove from the burner to cool. Store any excess nectar in the refrigerator. Yes, it is that easy!

Or take this advice from an online post: “I tried this recipe to attract hummingbirds. I boiled water, sugar, and petals from roses and gardenias.
Once it is cool, I place it on my hummingbird feeder. There are times that I haven’t even finish hanging it and the hummingbirds are flying around me and even some times already feeding while I’m hanging it. It is so cool that makes my son happy!”

So what about the red food coloring!?! Do we add it?

As pointed out in Birdwatchers Digest;

“A hummingbird regularly taking artificially dyed nectar may be ingesting the dye in concentrations that far exceed those recommended for humans.”

Make sure your hummingbird feeders have red parts on them to attract the hummers. Therefore the dye is unnecessary.

Once you get hummers coming, check your feeders often. Hummingbirds seldom approach a depleted feeder. In some mysterious way, they seem to know precisely when refills have been added.
