karate olympicsThe World Karate Federation (WKF) along with the Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF) are currently making a bid for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. As my regular readers know, I am very passionate in regards to karate. Not only has karate changed my body in a physical manner, but my mental strength has grown too. Karate teaches discipline, respect, confidence, self-defense, fitness and patience. The confidence that my boys have gained in the last year is astounding!

I have the privilege of training with some of the top karate children and teenagers in the country. Their dedication to training is like no other sport I have seen before. Not only are they dedicated to training, they are the most supportive group of people I have ever met. Always encouraging whether you are a white belt beginner or an advanced belt. Of course this says a lot about our Shihan.

So this brings me to my request! There is a Change.org petition out for the inclusion of karate in the 2020 Olympics. It takes less than a minute to sign this petition. I personally would love to see karate in the Olympics! As with many sports, making it to the Olympics would be the ultimate dream. Karate deserves that chance.

I have read the arguments that it would take away from traditional Japanese karate. I have to disagree. As my Shihan says, you can’t be good at sport karate without understanding bunkai and kata. Learn traditional form and then apply it to sport karate. A good dojo will teach tradition as well as sport.

So, do me a favor and sign the petition HERE. For more information on what karate in the Olympics would look like, checkout this video.
