As we head back to school, chances are that more deli meat will be used to pack sandwiches. I know my boys like ham & cheese sandwiches or just rollups in their bento box. I thought it would be helpful to remind everyone of the guidelines for keeping deli meat. Once the package of deli meat is open, it doesn’t have a long shelf life. Here are some estimates on how long deli meat is good for:

Fresh Deli Meat (the stuff actually cut at the deli counter) – Should last 5-6 days.

Prepackaged Deli Meat – Should last 7-10 days once opened. Of course pay attention to the sell by date on the package. If the sell by date is tomorrow, the meat probably won’t be good for 7 days once opened. Prepackaged deli meat does keep longer because it has more preservatives in it.

Hard Salami and Pepperoni – Lasts 2-3 weeks once opened. Since this meat is cured, it will last longer.

All deli meat should be stored properly to make it last the longest. Store in an airtight container in the coldest part of your refrigerator. If the meat smells funny or is slimy, throw it out.
