Emergency kit

Natural disasters seem to be happening on a regular basis around the world. While these tragedies are deeply saddening and unimaginable, it is a good reminder to be prepared. Everyone should have an emergency supply kit in their home and in their car. I made our home emergency kit several years ago after going through a major earthquake in California. I made our car emergency kit after hundreds of local motorists were stranded in a snow storm last year.

There are Pre-made Emergency Kit that you can buy or you can put one together yourself.

The basics of what you need:

  • Water
  • Food- canned (I bought cans with a pop-top lid) and non-perishable items (protein bars)
  • Radio
  • Flashlight
  • Spare batteries
  • Plastic sheeting and tape (I have several large plastic bags in mine)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Masks for poor air quality
  • Basic tools- wrench, pliers, screw driver

Additional Items I Included:

  • Food for our dogs and cat
  • Scissors
  • Lighters or matches
  • Blanket
  • Feminine Products
  • Personal Hygiene (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.)

Make sure to go through your emergency kit every year. As I looked through mine I realized that some items are expired and need to be replaced. For my car, I don’t keep all of the above items. I keep a smaller version that contains a first aid kit, blanket, flashlight, batteries, protein bars, a lighter and a small bottle of water.
