A Natural Head Lice Treatment

coconut oilHead lice. We’ve all heard about it but you only know how horrific it is IF you have to deal with it in your hair and/or household. Yuck. I’m itching just thinking about lice (or ants, fleas, ticks, etc.—-creepy crawlies are just not my thing)!

I (Litsa) never had to deal with head lice until I started student teaching when I was 20. I was busy teaching and walking the aisles in my assigned classroom but I had a habit of running my hands through my hair. Not a good thing with lice that were in attendance in my classroom. Most years that I taught, lice was an issue for my students but I had learned my lesson the first time (and luckily it was the last time).

Now as a mom, I haven’t had to deal with head lice but a dear friend has so the topic was fresh on my mind since our daughters attend the same school. A week before school ended one of her daughters came home with head lice. Then for five weeks, the lice infestation ran through her household just when she thought the bugs were gone for good. She noted that they used shampoo after shampoo that damaged one daughter’s hair so bad that she had to cut off all of her hair to save any of it! However, my friend also shared a natural head lice treatment that she used that saved everyone—-free and clear for over a week after using coconut oil!

I have heard of coconut oil’s powers but I wouldn’t have known to use coconut oil to treat head lice: “First, rinse your hair with the vinegar, don’t wash it out, leave it in until it dries. The vinegar dissolves the ‘glue’ which sticks the eggs to your hair follicles. When the vinegar has dried, pour coconut oil into your hair, making sure you get complete coverage. Cover your hair with a shower cap or hair wrap & leave it in for the whole day, as it will take a few hours for the coconut oil to smother & kill the lice. Comb your hair to get as many of the eggs & lice out as possible and then shampoo as normal. You only have to do this once, it really works & no chemicals!” says Nena Patrick from Coconutoil.com current July 2015 post.

This natural head lice treatment is in my files of files. There’s not one time that I’ll second guess if this works. IF the letter from school comes home or a case is noted in my classroom and/or my daughter’s classroom, we’ll use the coconut oil as a hair mask for preventative measures too!

Live life lice free with this natural head lice treatment but don’t forget to RECHECK all heads often!
