master bedroom organization

Since my master bedroom is currently torn apart due to the water leak in our bathroom, Litsa is going to share her organization tips! I have to say I LOVE how clean and organized her room is!

The master bedroom in our house is where I like to begin organizing our lives. It’s the last room I rest at night and the first place that I wake up to in the morning. Thus, everything must have a place in our bedroom—-and throughout our house. If “something we own” doesn’t have a specific “home” within our house, I eliminate it from our lives. If that item doesn’t belong in our lives, then it must be purged in one capacity or another. Items that don’t belong in our bedroom either get placed: in the garbage can, their proper place, the Mission bag, etc.

If your bedroom is NOT organized and it’s beyond recognition, you may want to read Southern Living’s Declutter in 4 Steps first. If there’s some order already, read these organizational tidbits:

Linens for Bed/Bed-Making

Keep one clean pair of sheets on your bed. Keep two other matching sets of bed linens in a drawer or closet nearby for easy access when you are changing sheets. Rotate the use of your sheets so that all linens remain fresh throughout their lifespan. Remember to make your bed first thing in morning so that your bedroom invites order to everything else.

Closet Organization

shoes in boxes

Shoes: Organize shoes in your closet by disregarding shoeboxes. Use clear plastic containers that can easily be wiped down. Take a digital photo of your shoes & place it on the outside so that with one glance, you know which pair of shoes you are looking for at any given time. The plastic containers that house my shoes are inexpensive containers from the Dollar Tree. I have been pleased with them and have yet (several years) to have to replace any. The plastic containers stack nicely. Our “older” home has long wooden shoe racks built in the back of the closet. Thus, daily worn shoes get placed there for easy access. Think your closet through. Browse ideas. Then, determine what’s best for you!

closet

Clothes: Use wooden hangers for your “hanging” clothes. Your closet will look like a mini boutique when rearranged with wooden hangers. Buy a few packs at a time to replace your metal and/or plastic hangers. I have enjoyed my wooden hangers that I purchased at Big Lots over various trips to the store (so as not to overextend my budget). The metal hanger twists so that all of your clothes can face one direction & remain organized. If you are thinking about buying several 100 wooden hangers, rethink your wardrobe. Do you have clothes that you don’t wear any longer, any with stains or holes, outdated jackets or slacks? Purge clothes that you no longer need before buying your wooden hangers to begin organization! NEVER store unclean clothes in a closet full of clean apparel! Keep dirty clothes in the laundry room!

bags on hooks

Scarves/Belts/Accessories: Use canvas baskets with labels on them to toss in accessories. These can be found at various stores. I have two canvas buckets in my closet. One that houses overnight luggage and one for scarves! Use the back of your closet, the wall, to hang hooks that you can use to hang handbags, scarves, & more.

My master bedroom is organized and personalized to serve my family’s lifestyle. Organize & create your bedroom’s space to fit your family’s needs with these organizational tips & others you come across. Share what works for you and how you use your master bedroom to organize the rest of your life/home.

  1. I see a brief glimpse of what I think might be another cute and practical organizing tip – When you discuss using wooden hangers and above the hooks for bags, etc I *think* I see a picture frame that may organize some hanging jewelry? If I am correct, are you able to post a better pix of that?? And if so, was it a DIY?? Want to post how to?? Thanks! I am always looking for neat ways to keep things organized – I use a large vase and sticks from outside that I shellacked and have that on my dresser to hang my necklaces, etc. That way I have a bit of the outdoors in my room AND a functional piece with which to hang my necklaces! (I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours! ;)

    • Hi Heather,
I have Litsa working on a little post of her hanging jewelry! I am in love with her closet! If you have time, send me a picture of your jewelry organization. I would love to share it with everyone!

      • I will try to get it to you over the weekend…a picture requires me to unclutter my dresser top first! Ha ha.

  2. I wish I had this much room in our closet. We are struggling to organize it. It has a small door and goes way back with no room to walk in.

We are trying to organize and simplify all our rooms. We did our master bedroom today and it is really nice to have room to move and homes for everything that is in there. Now the real challenge starts to see if we can keep it simple and organized! Here is my post if you want to check it out!
