A generator has been on our want list for several years now. We live in the country on a well. When the power goes out, we have no running water. Plus, we stockpile our meat- we bought a 1/2 cow last fall and a pig this spring. When the power was out for 50 hours this winter, my big stress was the food. Thankfully it was cold so the outdoor freezer stayed cold. However, now that we are into summer, we wouldn’t be so lucky if the power went out.
We wanted a generator to run for purely emergency needs. Yes it would be nice to run all of the luxuries like the television and hot water heater. However, that type of generator was not in our budget. We needed a generator that would run our refrigerator, freezer and our well.
When deciding on how big of a generator you need, checkout the wattage. A refrigerator needs about 700 running watts and 2200 surge watts (to get it started). Our well would need about 750 running watts and 1400 surge watts. For us a 4000 watt generator should be enough to run the essentials. Plus we wouldn’t have to keep the well running the whole time.
After researching prices, I found this DuroStar 4,000 watt generator on Amazon for $299.99 (currently $329.99). It also shipped for free with Amazon Prime! It also has 4.5 stars out of 184 reviews. If you are looking for an emergency generator, check this one out!
Make sure you are read up on preparing for a hurricane. If you have not taken steps to make a disaster preparedness kit, make sure you do it! You never know when you the power will go out and you will need to rely on those supplies.
