Preparing Your Kids for Preschool

Kindergarten is much like first grade these days. That means that preschool is more important than ever. Mr. B is three and is currently in home based daycare. I plan to place him in preschool next year which will be the year before kindergarten for him. But we are not waiting until then to get him ready for preschool.

One thing that we have always done with our boys is read. We read books most nights before bed. As the boys age, we ask them about the story we are reading. Ask questions about the characters, the colors on the page or the objects they see. Reading to your kids is a great way to initiate learning.

We found that if the kids interact with the book they are more likely to learn and remember. One of their favorite books is a picture search. This let’s them use their matching skills. Plus they are just so excited when they find the right objects!

The other thing we do with our kids is natural learning. We are very busy and on the go a lot. But that doesn’t mean that the kids can’t learn! Some of our best conversations happen in the car depending on what we see out the windows. Let the children’s questions navigate where the educational lesson for the day goes.

Once your child does enter preschool or kindergarten, make sure you are involved with your child’s teacher. Communication is the key to success.
