Last December, I (Litsa) created a journal from Paper Coterie (with a deal on How to Have it All) for my daughter (who was only 4.5 at the time). I presented it to her for St. Nick’s Day in December——-

Now six months later, it’s filled with lists of her writing, little stories we’ve written, pictures we’ve drawn, stickers, numbers and more. The journal traveled with us to Greece this summer and we add to it each day by reflecting on rhyming words, stories, places we’ve traveled, and more! We’re almost to the end of the journal and I’ve reflected on all that she’s captured and learned these past few months allowing each passage to envelope my heart.

As a teacher, I’d fall in love with the journals my first graders and students created throughout the year. I’d hate to send them home at the end of the year. Now, I have my five year old’s journal to hold dear to my heart. It’s one activity that we’ll enjoy together for years to come. I love to write and capture thoughts, doodles, lists, and more. Sophia is following suit too! When I give her a choice: “You can write in your journal or ______.”, she often picks writing in her journal. Thus, I know it’s time to pull out a my teacher list of journaling ideas so that we never run out of ideas for writing.

It’s simple. If you want to encourage your child(ren) to become a proficient reader/writer, allow him/her to write daily. The progress they will make will encourage you too. To get started, read about Summer Journals on Let’s Explore. Amy has many great tips to get you started. I love her note to her daughters at the beginning of their journals. Additionally, the Mead Journals are my favorite to use in the classroom. The writing lines and spaces for drawings are perfect for young children! I’ll introduce these Mead Journals to Sophia this fall when school routines return us to our home.

Ready? Create meaning with words and pictures.

Happy Journaling!
