Spicing Up Jarred Spaghetti Sauce

I prefer my homemade spaghetti sauce but sometimes there is just not enough time to make it. We always keep jarred sauce on hand as a backup meal. Add extra tomatoes and spices to the jarred sauce to spice it up and make it your own! Today Litsa shares her husband’s spaghetti sauce recipe.

Rusty’s Spaghetti Sauce

1 jar Traditional Ragu Pasta Sauce
1 can Whole Tomatoes
1 can Tomato Paste
1 can Tomato Sauce
a dash of Salt
a dash of Pepper
1 tsp of minced garlic
3-4 Bay Leaves
1 tsp Italian Seasoning
1 tsp Basil Leaves
1/4 c to 1/2 Cup sugar

Combine all of the ingredients in a large stockpot. Continuously mix it so that it does not stick as you bring the sauce to a boil. After the sauce begins to boil, you can turn it down to continue simmering as it takes in the flavor of all the spices. Simmer for about one hour.

For Meat Lovers: Add 1 lb ground beef & a diced onion. Brown your meat and onion together; drain the grease and add browned meat/onion to the sauce. Pour in your noodles and allow the spaghetti sauce to sit for a few minutes covered (with stove burners off). Serve warm and enjoy the rest for leftovers!

Dollar General has a 6 pk. of Ragu on sale this week for $8. That comes out to $1.33 a jar which is a decent price.

  1. Sounds good and pretty easy. I love making a batch of sauce myself but I like to simmer it all day so it’s usually jarred sauce for a quick meal. But this seems like I could do it on the weekdays. Thanks for linking up on our blog hop!
