Spring Means Tick Checks for People & Pets

Seed Ticks

Although I love Spring for the beautiful weather and the blooms, I also dread it for one little reason. Ticks will be out in full force as the weather warms. Last weekend Capt. M had a tick crawling on him. We live in the country and ticks are inevitable. The seed ticks are the worst since they are so hard to spot- think poppy seed size.

When our boys come in from playing outside, we put the tick check rule into effect. The boys must shower and check for ticks. Yes, they complain! However, ticks carry numerous diseases.

Lyme Disease rash

A couple of years ago, Mr. B has a case of possible Lyme Disease from a tick bite. If you or your child is bitten by a tick, make sure to save the tick in case you develop the Lyme Disease symptoms. I usually place the tick in a freezer bag or plastic container.

Another thing we do is use Frontline on our animals. Since our two dogs and cat are all different weights, we purchase the Frontline Spray. This works for all of the animals and you just squirt one spray per pound of body weight. It’s more economical than purchasing the individual tubes.

We also try to keep the boys out of the woods (that’s a hard task!) and let our chicken’s roam free to help control the bugs. Lastly, make sure you check your children every night for ticks if they are playing outside.

(By the way, I am sitting here itching and feeling like creepy crawlies are all over me ad I write this post! I can’t stand ticks!)
