Starting an Herb Garden

Herbs are fairly easy to grow and make such a difference in home cooking. The nice thing about an herb garden is that you can grow it right in your kitchen! If you don’t have room for an outdoor garden, make an herb garden in small pots to sit n a windowsill. When the weather warms, you can place the pots outside on your deck.

We started this herb garden two weeks ago. We used a Growums Garden Kit that was given to the boys for Christmas. The nice thing about these kits is the coco pellets and the watering tray. However, you could just use little pots with seed starting soil for your herb garden. This is a great project to do with your children to teach them how things grow.

We planted cilantro, parsley, oregano and basil. I use a lot of cilantro and parsley with juicing – so I am looking forward to growing our own! Note that the parsley and basil are slower to germinate. The cilantro is growing the fastest.

When our seedlings get a little bigger, we will transfer them to pots. I will also start a secondary crop in a few weeks since I will be using a lot of the cilantro and parsley. I also like to have a lot of basil so I can make homemade pesto!

How about you, are you planting a herb garden?

The information you provided about making an herb garden in the comfort of your own kitchen is a great idea. It got me inspired to do it. It seems quick and easy and by doing this it allows you to cook with the herbs and have easy access to the herbs as well.
One suggestion I have for this blog is to maybe have a step by step process as to how you went about setting up your herb garden. Therefore readers can follow this easy process when making their own herb garden.

  3. Something I once read that might be worth considering is to create the first pots about of old toilet rolls, which can then be planted in the soil without the need to disturb the seedlings. It’s good for the environment and good for the seedlings!
