Tips for Organizing a Child’s Room

Toys and clothes have taken over my child’s room. The closet was so jammed packed neither of us had a clue what was in there. A weekend forecast of cold rain meant that we had no excuse to avoid the closet monster.

My boys don’t really play with a lot of toys any longer. They are outdoor and sport orientated kids. When they are inside, most of the time they would prefer video games to playing with toys. Than meant that most of the toys in the closet could go.

The first step was getting my son to realize that he doesn’t need all of this stuff. Once the emotional attachment was gone, we could easily divide the items up.

Here is how we went about organizing his room:

  1. Pull everything out into the room if it’s big enough.
  2. Make piles: a keep pile, a donate pile, a trash pile and a resale pile.
  3. Once we had everything out, we could organize the items that needed to go back in. Put like items together. For example, all balls went into one container while Nerf guns went into another.
  4. Have an odds and ends pile. There were a few things that didn’t belong. We simply made a box of odds and ends. When we got done organizing the whole room, we were able to find spots for the odd things.
  5. Finish one section before moving onto the next. We concentrated on the lower closet first. Then I went through the top shelf followed by clothes and then the bookcase. It’s easy for me to get off track, so I had to make a mental rule to take one section at a time.
  6. Get the stuff out. If you plan to donate or sell the items, get them out of the house ASAP. Our donation items went straight into the car. Once you make the decision, stick with it.

It took half of the day to organize one child’s room. It is a time consuming chore, but the results are worth it! We had three large bags of trash and three large bags for donation come out of that room. Yes, he is a pack rat!

Now if I could just come up with a plan to prevent the closet monster from coming back!
