Travel Tip: Pack It, Wear It, & Toss It

With airlines tagging on costs for extra luggage, I am having to pack light for our five week plus vacation to Greece this summer! Luckily, I’ve always embraced my own little travel tip from my early twenty’s backpacking course through Europe. Right out of college, I had clothes that I couldn’t wear to my first teaching job. Thus, I saved all those short shorts, dresses, tanks and more! I packed them in my backpack, wore them, and tossed them as the trip brought us through several countries and islands that particular summer many years ago. I loved the lighter load that allowed me to pick up souvenirs throughout Italy, Greece, Germany, etc.

As I continued to travel in my late twenties and early thirties, I continued to keep my old, worn out clothes and/or accessories that I was tired of wearing. I didn’t take them to the mission or sale them at a yard sale. I kept them in my luggage for summer trips to Greece. When I’m hanging out at my parents’ home in the village or out on the beach letting the Mediterranean sun spoil my senses, I don’t need designer clothing! Thus, my tired and worn apparel from the fall, winter, and spring, or last year’s late summer become my comfort pieces for lounge time around the country. Some items, I’m just tired of….thus, these are donated to cousins, friends, and/or strangers…whoever wants it! The outcome is that my luggage is lighter on my way home, I haven’t over spent on new attire that I didn’t really need, some items found a new home, and I’m able to budget in new apparel items for late summer and early fall———even after a long, luxurious vacation.

Tip: There’s always a piece of artwork or jewelry that I want at my home away from home——-my vacationing resort. Thus, using this “Pack it, Wear it, & Toss it” tip allows for a little overspending! You can always buy gently used, new to you pieces from Goodwill for vacation too. The price tags are easy to handle while budgeting for vacation and it will allow you to splurge on a bathing suit and/or special evening dress——–or comfortable walking shoes for tracking more grounds while away from home!
