We are moving dirt in our garden and making plans for this summer’s vegetable garden! Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning a vegetable garden.

The first step in planning a vegetable garden is preparing the soil. Remove any weeds, rocks and dead plants. Use a rota-tiller to break up the soil and incorporate fertilizer. You probably want to test your soil before adding any supplements.

Start plotting out your vegetable garden on a piece of paper. Remember that crops need to be rotated. If you planted vegetables last year, make sure you don’t plant the same vegetable in the same place. Each type of plant needs different nutrients. By rotating crops, you will keep the soil from becoming depleted.

Make sure to incorporate flowers into your vegetable garden. Flowers not only attract beneficial insects, they also ward off harmful insects. Checkout my previous post on types of flowers to plant in a vegetable garden.

If you have limited space, consider at least starting an herb garden. You can start an herb garden quickly buy buying live plants in the produce section of your supermarket! An herb garden can also be started from seed. Checkout my tips for starting an herb garden and bring flavor to your table!
