Country Life: New Chicks

pullet chicks

We are adding to our chicken flock! Hopes for hatching eggs ourselves are diminishing as our once broody hen, brown town, no longer seems interested. So we headed to the local farm supply store and purchased some chicks.

baby chicks

Last year we purchased straight run chicks. What does straight run chicks mean? That means there is no telling what you are getting- male or female. The straight run chicks are not sexed. That didn’t work out too well last year as we ended up with 4 roosters and two hens. This year we paid $1 more per chick to get female sexed pullets. Hopefully we will end up with 6 hens!

Sydney and chicks

Our border collie Sydney has fell back into her roll as chicken guard dog. After settling the chicks into their box, we went in for dinner. I went to check on the chicks later only to find Sydney in the box with the chicks! I panicked at first, thinking she may have squished one. But after a quick headcount, all was well. She is just infatuated with baby chicks! We made it so Sydney can’t get to the chicks now just to be sure she won’t accidentally kill one. She lays outside the door all day, just waiting for us to let her in!
