The fun thing about reading fitness magazines is that there is always something new to incorporate into your routine. My (Litsa’s) November Oxygen magazine arrived in my mailbox early. Therefore, I have already devoured the pages of inspiration. One particular ‘dog eared’ page was that of ‘The Zottman Curl’ that was featured in the fall pages of fitness tips. This particular curl is “named after the famed strongman George Zottman of the 1880s who had ridiculous forearms, this biceps curl is a fun alternative to the traditional move, working not only your biceps but also your brachioradialis and forearms in one easy move. Do three sets of 12 to 15, either alternating arms or doing them simultaneously.”

At forty, I have to remind myself that FIT HAPPENS—–thus, this one. two. three. four. step Zottman Curl made the cut for my fitness journal. Maybe I’ll give it a try!?! I’m not strong(wo)man like George nor do I lift but I love to see a few lines in my arms since sleeveless tops usually embrace my wardrobe throughout all four seasons (in my forties)!

SO now I know about this Zottman curl. The directions are in my journal:

“Hold a set of dumbells in front of you with your arms extended and palms facing forward. Bend your elbows and curl the weights up toward your shoulders, squeezing hard at the top. Then flip your palms downward and lower the weights slowly to the start to complete the rep.”

These moves will enhance my forearms but what are brachioradialis?

The brachioradialis is a muscle of the forearm that flexes the forearm at the elbow.

After two decades of reading fitness magazines, I’m still learning and fascinated at the dynamics of the human body. I’ve always felt strong on the inside but never deemed myself strong on the outside. Researching how my body works, challenging myself to stay fit at forty, and moving out of my own way (overcoming my mind’s limitations), I’m always ready to leap into lengths to stay one step ahead of life’s unknowns.

My little two pound weights just might give this Zottman curl a try. Although I’m already envisioning a set of new weights to keep my upper arms moving this season.

Have you ever tried the Zottman curl?
