Keeping Your Pets Cool

As the weather heats up, remember to make sure your pets have what they need to keep cool. We have two outdoor dogs plus our chickens. During the summer months, they need extra water to make it through these hot days.

A few tips:

  • Have a couple of water buckets for outdoor pets. We have one on each side of the house. In the hot afternoons, one side of our house has direct sun and the water gets hot- not just a little warm but actually hot. Having water in shaded areas at all times helps alleviate that problem.
  • Freeze large chunks of ice and put it in the water buckets. Use a container like a cool whip tub. The ice will melt slowly during the day.
  • Make sure your pet has adequate shade. Our dogs hideout under the deck. The mud/dirt is cool under the deck and it is their favorite place in the summer.
  • Check the water supply every day. Animals go through a lot of water on hot days. If I am home, I change their water mid-day to give them a cool drink.
  • We have an automatic water supply for the chickens. We still check it every day and make sure it is still working. I would hate for them to run out!
  • Do not leave pets in a vehicle unattended.
  • Freeze large water bottles and position a fan to blow over the ice. This works well in a chicken coop or bunny hutch.
