Children move at a quick pace. One minute they are by your side and another they are out of sight. Summer is a busy time with many families heading to amusement parks, beaches and other populated events. We were at the beach a few weeks ago and a boy was missing for over an hour. Thankfully they found him safe and sound. He became disorientated and with the crowd of people he lost sight of his family.

There are a few steps you can take to help prevent your child from going missing. Here are a few tips:

  • Wear matching shirts in bright colors. We have done this several times when we have gone with a group to an amusement park or tourist destination. It helps everyone identify the people in their group.
  • If your cellphone has a camera, take a picture of your child the morning of the event. For one it is always helpful to have a current picture. The second reason is you will have a picture of the child in the outfit they are wearing that day.
  • Have a meeting place. Tell everyone in your party to meet at a particular spot if they get separated from the group.
  • If you are at a beach or lake, have an identifiable object on your beach blanket. When kids play in the water they easily get disorientated. Setup a bright bag, chair, umbrella or towel that the child will recognize.
  • Teach your child their full name and phone number. For younger children, there are disposable wristbands made by Mabel’s Labels that you can have personalized with cellphone numbers. Warning: do not put your child’s name on the wristband!
  • Try to stay calm. I know this is difficult- I have had to deal with a lost child before. Staying calm and focused is important.
  • If your child does get lost, do not wait to call 911.

I am sure all of you have some great tips of your own! I would love to hear them- just leave a comment on the post!
