Chess Game

Discipline- it’s like a game of chess.

Our boys have been driving us bonkers lately! Maybe it is there age but they seem to do everything opposite of what we ask. Tonight Capt. M (age 5) gave us quite the bedtime battle. I know he is overtired which doesn’t help the situation.

Hubby was handling Capt. M while I was putting Mr. B to bed. I was listening to the whole showdown and finally had to intervene. Why? Well, hubby was caving! Capt. M was asking for something and hubby repeatedly told him no. As the minutes wore on hubby was getting frustrated. He was just about to give in to Capt. M’s request when I stepped in.

I firmly told Capt. M to get in bed and that his behavior was unacceptable. I switched off the light and walked out. Five minutes of crying and he was fast asleep- checkmate!

Here is the deal, hubby is a youngest child and I am the oldest. I disciplined kids well before I had my own. Poor hubby is learning as we go. Some days it is frustrating to be the disciplinarian- I don’t want to be the only one to do the dirty work. And believe me, it’s not like the kids always listen to me anyways!

So who handles discipline in your household? Is it a team effort or does one person usually cave? Any tips for us?
