Baby Chicks 7 weeks

Our baby chicks are growing like crazy! They are about seven weeks old now. About two weeks ago we stopped using the heat lamp in the brooder. For the first few days we put the chicks in a chicken tractor that hubby made during daytime hours only. At night we placed them back in the brooder. As the nighttime weather warmed, we started leaving them out in the chicken tractor.

They LOVE having grass and bugs to eat. We move the chicken tractor each morning giving them a fresh patch of grass to peck at.

The baby chicks still make the little peeping noises! I imagine in the next two weeks those sweet peeps will turn into clucks. We are certain that we have at least two roosters. The roosters personalities will determine their fate on our little homestead- hoping for gentle roosters!

The next step is allowing the chicks to free range in the yard. Our border collie Sydney still keeps faithful watch. When we let the chicks out for a few minutes, she is right there herding them. Our older hens seem to be taking the new additions well. I think it helps that they can now see the baby chicks in the chicken tractor. They have only interacted through the chicken wire so far. The babies need to grow a bit more before they can run with the big girls!
