Yesterday, I shared with you my thoughts about drinking away the family’s wages—-to add to those thoughts I’m going to share two of our family’s receipts. One is from a restaurant order for our family of three—-$75.11 plus $10 tip = $85.11—consisted of:

  • Acorn Squash $5
  • House Salad $5
  • Steak $28
  • Mac & Cheese $5
  • Roasted Veggies $5
  • One Sweet tea $2.95
  • Two Waters $0
  • 2 Bar Drinks $18
  • Taxes $6.16

The other is from Sam’s Club—-$226.82—consisted of:

  • Chicken Breasts $13.31
  • Bacon $16.98
  • Beef Rounds $17.09
  • Ribeye $120.36
  • Pork Loin $23.62
  • Halloween Chocolates $10.98
  • Sugar $3.98 x 2
  • Tax $16.52

We ate and immediately headed to Sam’s to buy meat for the month. We had three minutes before the club closed for the evening but we still managed to run up a bill of $226.82—however, there are at least 14 main meats for us to enjoy as a family around the dinner table in the weeks to come! When you divide out fourteen meals by this Sam’s bill, it is $16.20 per meal for three or $5.40 each. This is much, much more cost effective than our restaurant bill listed above. We only had vegetable leftovers from the restaurant—and two of us enjoyed them for lunch the next day. Even after the Sam’s meats were divided out to freeze for meals, we still had bacon, candy, and sugar leftover.

So as I begin to rebalance the budget……..I have reminded myself to have a game plan for eating out even when we visit the BIG city for travel, luggage retrievals and more! Having visuals in the form of receipts helps immensely when you’re making the decision whether to dine in or dine out!

Having this discussion with my husband with receipts in hand helps too—–budgeting begins with everyone involved. Even children…….our five year old is beginning to understand that we work to pay bills (many discussions and experiences recently have opened these doors of conversation).

Restaurant $28.37 per meal/person vs. Home Meals $5.40 per meal/person—and the portions at home are hearty too (picture posted above)—-visualize, prioritize, and save as you feed your family!!

Do you put a price tag on your meals to help budget accordingly!?!
